Spring is once again in full swing and it is time to end the winter hibernation. Farmers’ Markets are now opening across the Greenbelt and there are plenty of fresh products in season for you to enjoy. Asparagus has arrived, although it was a little behind this year, and there are many other fruits, vegetables and plants for your garden available in early spring that you should look out for.
The month of May is a great time for Jerusalem artichokes, beets, apples, carrots and and a multitude of greens. Also keep in mind that vegetables such as greenhouse tomatoes, rutabaga and mushrooms are generally available all year round in local grocery stores. Many of these items are a staple of a well-rounded kitchen and a great addition to any meal.
So check out your local farmers’ market. It is a great way to source local food and support Greenbelt farmers. Delicious local food awaits!
